Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a range of symptoms that can include difficulties with concentration, impulsivity, hyperactivity, distractibility, emotional regulation, task switching, and organization.
There are three distinct classifications of ADHD: Inattention presentation, Hyperactive presentation, and Combination presentation. These classifications are linked to differences in brain structure, function, and chemistry that contribute to the symptoms experienced.
ADHD is primarily a hereditary condition that can affect people at all stages of life. Symptoms vary among individuals and potentially evolve over time.
Research has shown that individuals with ADHD may have a smaller frontal lobe, which is responsible for executive function. In children, the development of this area may lag their peers by approximately 3 years, reaching full maturity around 30-35 years of age.
The frontal lobe plays a crucial role in functions such as planning, organizing, focus, attention, self-control, memory, communication, problem-solving, impulse control, and social behavior, collectively known as executive functions.
